Does a Smile Open All Doors? Understanding the Impact of Appearance Disclosure on Accommodation Sharing Platforms

    Get PDF
Online photographs govern an individual’s choices across a variety of contexts. In sharing arrangements, facial appearance has been shown to affect the desire to collaborate, interest to explore a listing, and even willingness to pay for a stay. Because of the ubiquity of online images and their influence on social attitudes, it seems crucial to be able to control these aspects. The present study examines the effect of different photographic self-disclosures on the provider’s perceptions and willingness to accept a potential co-sharer. The findings from our experiment in the accommodation-sharing context suggest social attraction mediates the effect of photographic self-disclosures on willingness to host. Implications of the results for IS research and practitioners are discussed

The present article reveals injective vocabulary as a means of expressing verbal aggression (on the material of the Independent, The Times, The Guardian periodicals, as well as in Internet comments on news and articles). The analysis of articles with injective vocabulary was carried out by the method of continuous sampling. The relevance of this article is due to the fact that in the sociolinguistic aspect verbal aggression is considered as a consequence of the unfavorable sociocultural position in society, growth of asociality, general decline in the level of speech culture, vulgarization of speech, propaganda of violence in the media, a significant weakening of communication and going online. The author reveals the essence of verbal aggression as a sociolinguistic phenomenon, cites the positions of the authors: A.D. Vasilyeva, T.A. Vorontsova, O.S. Korobkova, Z. D Popova, I. A Sternina, Ya. L. Fedorova, N. S. Yakimova, Barbieri F., Dong N., Cornips L., Inkpen D., Luzón, MJ, Ricoeur P., Saggion H., Shaffer K., Sumath C., Trieschnigg D., Volkova S., Yea Jang J. The author proposes a grouping of actual invective vocabulary: 1) Internet jargon; 2) vocabulary, indicating the inferiority of various kinds (verbalization of physical or spiritual impairment); 3) physiological deficiencies in the satisfaction of the natural needs of the person, as well as organs and parts of the body; 4) the opposition "yours is a stranger"; 5) offensive nominations for people based on race, nation (division into "white" and "black", true British and Europeans); 6) courses; 7) statements threatening life and health. The author provides examples of offensive language in the English media for each group. Special attention is paid to ethnopolitics. In the examples, the author focuses on evaluative interjections and particles, familiar references, colloquial expressions, colloquial vocabulary, reduced style vocabulary, and offensive nominations and exaggerations. The author comes to the conclusion that injective vocabulary, which has mobility and dynamism as a level of the language system, communicative and cognitive functions, represents, on the one hand, a verbal form of expressing the aggressive behavior of a person, on the other hand, a means of destructive influence on the interlocutor

Crafting Audience Engagement in Social Media Conversations: Evidence from the U.S. 2020 Presidential Elections

    Get PDF
Observing inconsistent results in prior studies, this paper applies the elaboration likelihood model to investigate the impact of affective and cognitive cues embedded in social media messages on audience engagement during a political event. Leveraging a rich dataset in the context of the 2020 U.S. presidential elections containing more than 3 million tweets, we found the prominence of both cue types. For the overall sample, positivity and sentiment are negatively related to engagement. In contrast, the post-hoc sub-sample analysis of tweets from famous users shows that emotionally charged content is more engaging. The role of sentiment decreases when the number of followers grows and ultimately becomes insignificant for Twitter participants with a vast number of followers. Prosocial orientation (“we-talk”) is consistently associated with more likes, comments, and retweets in the overall sample and sub-samples

Emotions and Information Diffusion on Social Media: A Replication in the Context of Political Communication on Twitter

This paper presents a methodological and conceptual replication of Stieglitz and Dang-Xuan’s (2013) investigation of the role of sentiment in information-sharing behavior on social media. Whereas Stieglitz and Dang-Xuan (2013) focused on Twitter communication prior to the state parliament elections in the German states Baden-Wurttemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, and Berlin in 2011, we test their theoretical propositions in the context of the state parliament elections in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany) 2021. We confirm the positive link between sentiment in a political Twitter message and its number of retweets in a methodological replication. In a conceptual replication, where sentiment was assessed with the alternative dictionary-based tool LIWC, the sentiment was negatively associated with the retweet volume. In line with the original study, the strength of association between sentiment and retweet time lag insignificantly differs between tweets with negative sentiment and tweets with positive sentiment. We also found that the number of an author’s followers was an essential determinant of sharing behavior. However, two hypotheses supported in the original study did not hold for our sample. Precisely, the total amount of sentiments was insignificantly linked to the time lag to the first retweet. Finally, in our data, we do not observe that the association between the overall sentiment and retweet quantity is stronger for tweets with negative sentiment than for those with positive sentiment

The Predictive Power of Social Media Sentiment for Short-Term Stock Movements

    Get PDF
Ever since modern-day financial markets existed, people have been trying to forecast movements in stock prices, as accurate predictions would entail economic benefits and the reduction of risks. This paper examines whether social media sentiment can be used to predict short-term stock movements. Using more than two years of data from Twitter, we assess the effect the extracted sentiment holds for 10 companies listed in the S&P500. Applying different sentiment analysis approaches and forecasting models, we find that for three out of the ten companies, sentiment does significantly improve the forecasting performance. A custom-built sentiment model outperforms an off-the-shelf VADER model, and tree-based models deliver better performance than linear ones. On the theoretical front, this provides evidence against the Efficient Market Hypothesis and warrants future research regarding the circumstances under which stock returns might be predictable

Coping and Regulatory Responses on Social Media during Health Crisis: a Large-scale Analysis

    Get PDF
During a crisis event, social media enables two-way communication and many-to-many information broadcasting, browsing others’ posts, publishing own content, and public commenting. These records can deliver valuable insights to approach problematic situations effectively. Our study explores how social media communication can be analyzed to understand the responses to health crises better. Results based on nearly 800 K tweets indicate that the coping and regulation foci framework holds good explanatory power, with four clusters salient in public reactions: 1) “Understanding” (problem-promotion); 2) “Action planning” (problem-prevention); 3) “Hope” (emotion-promotion) and 4) “Reassurance” (emotion-prevention). Second, the inter-temporal analysis shows high volatility of topic proportions and a shift from self-centered to community-centered topics during the course of the event. The insights are beneficial for research on crisis management and practicians who are interested in large-scale monitoring of their audience for well-informed decision-making
